volunteering opportunities

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware.  Trained House volunteers help to make the House a home away from home seven days per week, 365 days per year by volunteering a set schedule within one of the following areas:

Reception Volunteers
Reception volunteers greet visitors, families, and community members when they arrive at the House, process room payments, take room requests over the phone, enter family data into our database, and help the House to acknowledge donations when they are received at the Reception area.  Reception volunteers must be able to multi-task, be flexible, and possess a comfort level with basic computer skills.

Family Room Volunteers
Family Room volunteers help to prepare guest rooms for a family’s arrival, including changing bedspreads and light cleaning of the guest rooms.  They check families into the House and help them to understand House procedures and policies, give them a tour, and make them aware of services available to the families at the House during their stay.  Family Room volunteers also help with basic kitchen clean-up tasks such loading and unloading dishwashers, taking trash out, and putting out snacks and food for the families to enjoy.

Van Drivers
Van Drivers must be at least 21 years of age. Trained van drivers use the two House vans to take families staying at the House on errands on Route 202 and with transportation to the Hospital.

Teen and College Student Volunteers
For high school students ages 15-18 who are looking for a rewarding way to spend summer break or contribute to the community throughout the school year, this program offers hands-on volunteer work.  Openings are available on a first-come, first served basis. College students looking for service learning opportunities may also apply during fall and spring semesters.

Ronald McDonald Family Room®  Program Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers help to bring the home away from home feeling of a Ronald McDonald House® to a Ronald McDonald Family Room. Volunteers create a welcoming, friendly and peaceful environment for the families that find comfort in a Ronald McDonald Family Room while their child undergoes treatments at the hospital.  There are 3 Ronald McDonald Family Room Programs in Delaware: One in the Family Resource Center at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, one at Christiana Hospital in the NICU and one in Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover.  Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are operated in partnership with the hospitals where each is located. Volunteers applying to these programs must also apply to the hospital volunteer program where the respective rooms are located.

Episodic Volunteer Opportunities
Episodic volunteers may not be able to help with a set weekly schedule but are available to help the House on an as-needed basis.  Episodic volunteer opportunities include helping at Special Events held throughout the year, helping with office projects, or joining the House’s Snack Pack.

Snack Pack:  Members of our Snack Pack prepare baked goods such as cookies, brownies, and breads that our families enjoy with a meal or as a dessert or midnight snack. Snack Pack members can also donate fresh fruit baskets or healthy individual snacks. They can also come to the House individually or as a group and prepare casserole meals that can be frozen and used for lunches and dinners at the House. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Snack Pack, please contact Megan Racobaldo at 302-428-5317 or m.racobaldo@rmhde.org.

Special Events:  Special events are held throughout the year where volunteers are needed behind the scenes at the event or working on a committee to help make them a success!

Family Activity Nights:  Pet Therapy, Crafts, Game Night, and Scrapbooking are all examples of family night activities that can be coordinated or lead by volunteers seeking to share special skills and talents with the families of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. Musicians, magicians, actors, please share your talents and brighten the day for families staying at the House.

Collect Pop Tabs, Wish List Items, and Koins for Kids!  Help the House by organizing an aluminum soda Pop Tab Drive, collect items needed from our Wish List, or save spare change with Koins for Kids! All of these items can be collected as part of a collection drive and all help to provide a "home away from home".
